Betrayal trauma refers to the emotional, psychological, and physiological distress experienced by an individual as a result of a deep betrayal by someone they trust.

It typically occurs within close relationships such as intimate partnerships, friendships, or family bonds.

Betrayal can manifest in various forms, including infidelity, deceit, broken promises, or violations of trust.

The experience of betrayal trauma can be extremely distressing, often leading to feelings of shock, anger, sadness, confusion, powerlessness, and a profound sense of loss.

The person who has been betrayed may struggle with a range of psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, difficulty trusting others, and low self-esteem.

The following is a list of some examples of betrayal:

  • Committing an act of emotional or physical infidelity
  • Not being there when your partner is hurting or sick
  • Not keeping promises
  • Keeping secrets
  • Lying
  • Humiliating or putting down your partner in public or private
  • Being physically violent
